Benefits of Therapy
Essentially Counselling and Psychotherapy are talking therapies which help you to reflect and gain perspective on your experiences, and deal more effectively with emotional and psychological problems.
The process is creative, supportive, and challenging helping to facilitate growth and change. Within this relationship there are regular opportunities to review the work and what is co-created in the relationship between the client and the therapist to ensure that both are satisfied with the process.
What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling and Psychotherapy are sometimes used interchangeably and although the skills used are similar Counselling tends to focus on specific issues that you are facing now such as bereavement and is usually short term.
Psychotherapy is a more involved process working with the individual over a longer period to explore more enduring problems.
When is the right time to seek Counselling and Psychotherapy?
People seek counselling and psychotherapy for a variety of reasons. You might be feeling overwhelmed, unhappy, experiencing a lack of purpose, feeling stuck or going through a life crisis. Whatever the reason it can be helpful to talk to someone who will listen and help you to explore, understand and gain insight. This is especially important if you have had a lot of pain or trauma in your life as these painful experiences located in the past can continue to affect the way you feel and behave in the present. Often the things we do not confront can impact on the way we respond in the present and may result in you repeating patterns of behaviour which no longer serve you. Counselling and Psychotherapy can help you to begin to recognize these life scripts and expand the choices you have available to you to respond from a healthier place.
Deciding to seek therapy is personal to you and your circumstances. Whether you decide to begin therapy for a specific problem, personal development or to address longer term problems therapy can be a supportive space for you.
